What is a scullery? The room behind our name
From washing pots to preparing meals, sculleries support the work around cooking. That practical role inspired our name.

A scullery is a room used for washing dishes, cleaning utensils and doing other messy kitchen work, usually beside the main kitchen. Its plural is sculleries. Merriam-Webster's definition centres on that practical work, which also inspired the name of our household cooking app.
What were sculleries used for?
Traditional sculleries gave washing and cleaning their own space. At Charlecote Park, workers used well-water to wash vegetables and crockery in the scullery adjoining the kitchen.
Historic England distinguishes the cooking kitchen, the scullery for washing pots and the pantry for food storage. As equipment and domestic life changed, many homes brought those jobs into one kitchen.
The word has older roots: Merriam-Webster traces it through Middle English and Anglo-French to the Latin scutella, a drinking bowl. It is pronounced roughly SKUL-uh-ree.
What is a modern scullery?
A modern scullery extends the kitchen's working space. A sink, worktop and storage are its basic features; a dishwasher, small appliances or baking area may also fit the household's routine.
Kitchens By Design emphasises usable bench space and easy access. The purpose is to give preparation and cleaning somewhere to happen while keeping the main kitchen available for cooking or serving.
Scullery vs pantry vs butler's pantry
The main difference is the job each space supports.
| Space | Main job |
|---|---|
| Scullery | Washing up and preparing food |
| Pantry | Storing food and supplies |
| Butler's pantry | Storing serving pieces and arranging food for the table |
Modern rooms often combine these roles. A butler's pantry may include a sink or drinks area, so its name alone doesn't describe its contents. Designer Tami Faulkner shows the distinctions in example floor plans.
How sculleries inspired Scullery
A meal involves work before anyone turns on the hob: finding a recipe, agreeing what to cook and checking what needs buying. The idea of giving that supporting work a place of its own inspired thescullery.app.
Scullery brings recipes into one shared household cookbook and connects them to planning, shopping and cooking. Imagine saving a pasta recipe from a website. Your household can shortlist it, choose it together and add the ingredients you need to a shared shopping list. The same recipe is there when someone starts cooking.
Start with a small collection of recipes you already use, and give the work around them a home too.
